Invited Classes Shine At Sail Sydney 2017

Published Fri 15 Dec 2017

Invited Classes at Sail Sydney 2017 were treated to some classic Sydney Harbour conditions on Saturday with 10 to 20 knots and clear skies.

The day launched with all classes eager to start their campaigns at the last major dinghy regatta before the Christmas break with Laser 4.7, 29ers, Nacra 15s, Optimist, Tasar, Pacer, Flying 11, Manly Juniors, International Cadets, Sabot, Open Bic, Bic Techno and RS:X sailors making the most of the perfect sailing weather.

After missing out on racing yesterday due to lack of wind, the RS:X competitors whipped through day two in moderately shifty conditions with Emma Baillie leading the women’s fleet and Harry Walker ahead in the men’s.

“It was really nice day of racing, a really good day out on the Harbour here in Sydney,” Emma said.  “We’re dodging seaplanes so it’s quiet spectacular and we certainly don’t get that where we’re from up in Brisbane

Onshore, Open Bic sailors, Jack Reid and Sam Blair both said sailing was a lot of fun out on the Harbour with both boys keen for the final day of the regatta tomorrow.

Clancy Dwyer in the Sabots also enjoyed the day on Sydney Harbour making the most of the choppy conditions and negotiating the traffic.

“It was a really good day and we had a heap of fun,” Clancy said.  “There was a bit of chop about but really good sailing.”

Lara Quigley and Charlotte Toll from Ascham School are leading the Pacer fleet by one point after two days of racing with both girls keen for the final day of the regatta.

“Today was good, it was quite windy towards the end and we’re not the heaviest of crews so it was tough but really fun,” Lara said. “Tomorrow is our final day and it will be a long day but hopefully we will have an Ascham on top which will be good.”

The final day of Sail Sydney 2017 starts tomorrow from 10am.
